Ethnic Groups and Discrimination
The ethnic group that I chose for this assignment is Puerto Rican Americans, likewise known as estadounidenses Puertorriqueños. The early history of Puerto Rico is a very complex one that consists of colonization and oppression. When first “ notice” by Christopher Columbus, the island was called Borinquen and was inhabited by Arawak and Taino Indians. The island was soon colonized by the Spanish and the name of the island was changed from Borinquen to Puerto Rico. Soon after colonization the natural tribe that inhabited the island were made into slaves and almost exterminated by the Spanish. Years later, as a result of the Spanish-American War, Puerto Rico was ceded to the unify States in the Treaty of Paris on December 19, 1898 (Puerto Rican Americans, 2009).

However, the immigration member for Puerto Ricans is very different from the immigration process that other Latino Americans go through. This act was approve shortly after President Theodore Roosevelt visited Puerto Rico.
He recommended to the Puerto Rican Congress that the people become U.S. citizens, and the Jones act was then officially signed by Roosevelt on March 2, 1917 (History of Puerto Rico, 2009). With this law, Puerto Rico:
