Satellite Radio was introduced in 1992 when the U.S. Federal Communications consignment (FCC) allocated a spectrum in the S band for nationwide broadcasting of satellite-based Digital Audio Radio Service (DARS). Four companies employ for a license, but the FCC only accepted two in 1997. These two companies were Sirius Satellite Radio and XM Satellite Radio, who paid much than $80 million each to use space in the S-band for digital satellite transmission.
