Dorie Miller enlisted in the U.S. navy blue in 1939. Two historic period later he was a U.S. navy blue Mess Attendant, gage Class, stationed in Pearl Harbor aboard the battleship USS westward Virginia. On December 7, 1941, Pearl Harbor was bombed by Japan. Miller was aboard the West Virginia during this time. Just after eight in the morning that day Miller was collecting laundry when a torpedo hit the West Virginia. He ran to his battle station, the flack battery magazine amidships. Dorie ran into Lieutenant Commander Doir Johnson, who was searching for soulfulness to help him on the bridge. Miller was exactly what he was sounding for and took him to the bridge. The ships captain, Mervyn Bennion lay there mortally wound from a bomb blast. Johnson and Miller carried the captain to safer place and the helped enthral other wounded men to safer places.
Ensign Victor Delano gave a new order to Miller to pass ammunition to dickens crewmen firing 50-caliber Browning antiaircraft machine guns. Not more later Dorie had taken over one of the guns and was contributing to the self-renunciation of Pearl Harbor. Even with no machine gun genteelness at all, Miller survively kept firing until he was ordered to abandon ship.
Dorie Miller hauled a number of plenty through the burning oily water to the quarterdeck, saving a number of people who would have otherwise died.
Do to his brave acts on December 7, 1941; Dorie Miller was commended by secretary of the Navy Frank Knox On April 1, 1942 and on May 27, he was awarded the Navy Cross for his courage in the battle. He was later delegate to the USS Liscome Bay in 1943. In the early hours of November 42, 1943, the ship was his by a torpedo fired from a Japanese hoagy; Miller was among the 646 who died. The U.S. Navy honored Doris Miller once once more in 1973 by commissioning a frigate ship in his name: USS Miller.
