Emile Zola uses the principles and techniques of naturalism to reason out in favor of his preferred brand of social reforms, whereas, Flaubert is more of an aesthetic whose literature is designed around the central article of faith of aestheticism, l'art pour l'art (art for art's sake). But his precise, c argonful portrayal of object and event, although naturalistic in method, was not naturalistic in aim. Flaubert's concern was to create veracity through the art of exact selection and the chiseled nonpargonil of his style" (Murphy 354). Zola's aim was to catalyze the social reforms he appoint necessary, which developed into a Christian socialism in his by and by literary works.
