One of the most popular “be your self best self essays”is the “be yourself essay” that is authored by Shelby.
A sample of this essay is illustrated below. Most teenagers have come across phrases that seem to encourage them to try and be at their best more often than they do. To many teenagers, such phrases just seen to exert more pressure by suggesting that the position that they find themselves in is just not good enough.
The most common reaction to this feeling of pressure being exerted to them is anger because it is neither easy to accept that one is just not good enough to be accepted nor is it easy to embrace change especially if it is being done just to satisfy some standards that have been set for the teenagers by someone who many not be a teenager himself or herself.
Such sentences encouraging people to be at their best can be perceived as some form of hypocrisy of the culture because most people, including teenagers, got to the current position that they find themselves because they tried to be the best at whatever it is that they were doing.
This is hypocrisy because it is the same society that attributes so many negative things that happen to teenagers on pressure, in particular peer pressure. So how is it that the society discourages teenagers from succumbing to pressure exerted to them while at the same time exerting pressure on them to change and fit certain “acceptable” standards? To Shelby, the words encouraging people to be themselves should not cause anger to rise within people.
