At the introduction of the story are the catalogues of guns which are clearly explained to the reader. The story begins with Dace amercing sufficient courage to request his mother to give him some two dollars which he wants to use to purchase a gun of the same value from Ol’ Joe’, the store man. Even though his mother is adamant, at first, to give him the money to buy the gun, Dave sweet talks his mother into finally giving in albeit with the condition that he first takes the gun to his mother upon purchasing it.

Dave is exited and races to the shop to purchase a gun, his very first. Dave however does not really keep his promise choosing to return home late, long after everyone else is asleep. His mother however hears him coming and when she tiptoes to his room and asks him for the gun, he lies that he hid it somewhere outside the house. Early the next morning, Dave leaves to go plough on the farm of Mr. Hawkins with the gun stripped on his thigh.

He knows that he will be alone in the woods and therefore that he will be free to fire his gun as many times as he wishes without interference. Dave is scared to make his first shot of the gun and when he finally gathers enough courage to do so, he closes his eyes and shoots. To his amazement, shooting gun hurts. The noise of the gun is so loud that it scares a way the mule, which he later on finds out that he shot.
