In The Roots of Debate in Education and the promise of Dialogue, Deborah Tannen points out many problems in todays nurture systems. The Essay focuses on poor communication in my opinion, mingled with teachers and students and students to students. She states that the way were being taught is deeply agonistic. afterwards reading Tannens paper, it made me get a faceing of this bear-sized power struggle between students and teachers, and this made me think back. Ive never been the student to argue or ask questions, but after thinking back it kind of makes sense. Classrooms have had a feel similar to a war zone, especially when your class is fifteen kids and e verybody thinks theyre right. Thats what I think is meant when she calls our learning system agonistic.
