In Joseph Conrads Heart of Darkness, Marlow is in a position where he must face the fact that Kurtz is not what he seems. Marlows disillusion baffles his identification with Kurtz terrifying. He this instant sees Kurtz as not only unethical, but also inhumane. This leads him to intrust that he sees similar qualities in himself, and it makes it difficult for him to accept the tonic Kurtz.
As Marlow travels up the river, he is very preoccupied with Kurtz. He and the people he has met along the way have build him up to be a stunning man. s t a t i o n(32). Marlow begins to wonder how he will monetary standard up to Kurtz and what kind of impression he will make on the company. The more obsessed he becomes with Kurtz, the more he sets himself up to be disappointed when he comes into contact with Kurtz.
Upon hit the station, Marlows disillusion begins.
He meets an English speaking Russian who he calls the Harlequin, he is greeted and seems to have neutral feelings towards him. After a few minutes of conversation, he finds that this man is completely mad, and is thus uneasy about his situation. Upon hearing all the horrid things Kurtz is real up to, his disillusion is really setting in. I look it had not occurred to him that Kurtz was no idol of mine(59). Now that Marlow has seen the current Kurtz, he is aware of how easily he could become alike this. Marlow is now in denial, and desperately wants to suppress these feelings.
